CBT IS NOW CONSIDERED FIRST-LINE TREATMENT FOR CHRONIC INSOMNIA

Approximately 10% of adults report chronic insomnia (defined as insomnia occurring a minimum of 3 nights per week for one month or longer).  A recent review of the research published in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine, demonstrated that CBT is an effective treatment  for adults with chronic insomnia.  The lead author, Dr. James Trauer,  is quoted as saying: “This supports recommendations that CBT [for insomnia] should be used as the initial intervention for chronic insomnia when possible".

The journal, Sleep, recently published an article in which a Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT) demonstrated that after a single, 1 hour CBT session 60% of participants had remission of short-term insomnia (defined as less than three months) compared to 15% of the control group.

As with CBT for depression or anxiety, CBT for insomnia involves the teaching of skills that can be applied across one's lifetime when confronted with symptoms.
